"Your teen must see a passion for the Word in your life. Only then will they see how valuable the Bible truly is."
In a culture where everyone is searching to find "truth," many of our teens are looking for the truth in all the wrong places. According to the Barna Research Group, "Discerning the existence of moral truth is so insignificant to most teenagers that almost half of them (46%) cannot even identify a source of information that has had the greatest influence on their thinking about the matter. The most common influence was family at 21%." With the book and movie, "The Da Vinci Code", and the rise in curiosity of the Book of Judas, distorted messages are coming at teens from all sides. In a recent poll, more than 200,000 people changed their views about Jesus Christ being the son of God after reading the "The Da Vinci Code" (tmnews.com). Parents MUST equip their teens with truth by teaching them where to find it. Christians know the Bible is where you find truth, but how much time do you really spend studying the Bible on a regular basis? You must know what you believe and why you believe it. Your teen must see a passion for the Word in your life. Only then will they see how valuable the Bible truly is. Parents must also create a family environment where asking the hard questions is encouraged. Pray that your teen would come to YOU when they need to talk to someone about a moral issue and not go to an unreliable source. Josh McDowell said that “seventy five percent of all kids coming to Christ today...are coming to Christ because He is the best thing that's come along so far, that they've filtered through their experience.” Parents, it's time to put on your boxing gloves and come out fighting for the truth!
Start fighting for truth by knowing some of the differences between the Bible and the Da Vinci Code.

What "The Da Vinci Code" says:
Jesus is a great man or prophet in the earliest historical sources but was later proclaimed divine at the Council of Nicaea.
What the Bible says:
Jesus is called “God” (theos) 7 times in the New Testament. He is called “Lord” (kyrios) in the divine sense numerous times. No serious historian argues that these texts postdate the Council of Nicaea.

What "The Da Vinci Code" says:
Jesus Christ was secretly married to Mary Magdalene.
What the Bible says:
It is very clear that nowhere in the Bible does it say that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married.

What "The Da Vinci Code" says:
The Bible, as we know it today, was collated by the pagan Roman Emperor Constantine.
What the Bible says:
The Old Testament existed prior to even Jesus’ day, well before Constantine was even born. And the New Testament was not formalized until about 393-397 A.D. (after Constantine’s death).
While it might alarm you that so many people will see the movie, The Da Vinci Code, the most alarming statistics are what our Christian teens say they believe!

Will you go see The Da Vinci Code movie?

61% - Yes
30% - No
5% - I haven’t decided yet
2% - Other comments

Christian teens were asked to indicate more than one of their basic beliefs of the Christian faith. Here are some of their findings:

63% - Don’t believe Jesus is the Son of the one true God.
81% - Believe all truth is relative to the individual and his/her circumstances.
51% - Don’t believe Jesus rose from the dead.
68% - Don’t believe the Holy Spirit is a real entity.

Teens are looking for the truth! Parents must help their teen find real truth by talking about and understanding what the Bible says about them. Here are some questions to start this healthy dialogue:

1. Do you think there are absolute truths (never changes), or is every decision based on relative truths (based on circumstances)? What are some absolute truths?

2. Since there are so many beliefs about God, how can you tell if a particular belief is true or false?

3. How can a movie like "The Da Vinci Code" be used to help people understand the real truth?

4. Where and/or who do you go to when you are looking for an answer to a question? Do you think this a reliable person or place to go? Why do you go there?
Pray that:

1. Your teen will seek the truth in God's Word and in the counsel of Godly parents and people in their lives.

2. God will clearly define your teen's definition of right and wrong.

3. God will guard your teen's heart as they are bombarded with mixed messages about the truth every day.

4. As parents, you will be ready to listen to your teen's questions as they arise and to help them find answers.

"For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths." I Timothy 4:3-4 (NIV)

It is sad to say, but the time HAS come when many people will not put up with sound doctrine. People want answers, but they don't want the truth. It is crazy how the latest fad or self-help guru can lure people into believing a total lie. It is much easier to hear what we want to hear and what makes us feel good. People love to hear that God is love, but don't like it when they are told that there is only one way to God through Jesus Christ. That very important truth is not seen as loving, but narrow minded and judgmental. Praise God every day that He has given us a place where we can find real truth! We must teach our teens that the Bible is our anchor in a world that is being blown and tossed by the wind. In an ever-changing world, God’s word is the one constant that has always and will always be the truth.

Below are some more alarming findings about

* A recent poll, taken in April 2006, found that 13% of Americans and 17% of Canadians think Jesus was married and had a family. (worldnetdaily.com)

* Searches on the Internet for Da Vinci Code jumped 130% over the past week, resulting in a first-ever appearance on this week's Lycos 50. In fact, search activity for Da Vinci Code generated more online search interest than American Idol. (lycos.com)

* According to a recent survey done by the North American Mission Board (NAMB), 72% believed that the Bible was closer to the truth than The Da Vinci Code; 6% accepted The Da Vinci Code's account as the truth; and 22% were not sure or believed neither. (bpnews.org)

Kids in the Way is made up of David Pelsue (vocals), Nathan Ehman (guitar), Eric Carter (drums), and Austin Cobb (bass). Their self-titled EP helped land them a guest performance slot with Audio Adrenaline who eventually signed them to Flicker Records. They have toured with Audio Adrenaline, Relient K, Skillet and Pillar. "In keeping with the group's brilliant rock sound, Apparitions of Melody (their newest album) simply mixes edgy guitars, frantic energy and engaging lyrics to create a soundtrack for modern living." Several songs deal with relationship issues and the band "writes in a universal way that appeals to our common humanity." kidsintheway.com

Background: Taking Back Sunday started with Eddie Reyes in 1999 and three friends with shared musical vision. The band was picked up by Victory Records after their initial demo released. Their debut album launched in March 2002 with much touring to follow. Shows began selling out and popularity grew. Each member writes music that is said to have "catchy yet meaningful songwriting layered over a unique blend of rock's best attributes. They have a classic hardcore sound with pop components." music.yahoo.com

What Parents Should Know: The music from this punk band has angry overtones and touches on violence, abortion, cheating and coping in relationships. It also contains some foul language.

Parent/Teen Q&A: “We're all just people that were at the right place at the right time. That's not anything I think people should be looking up to. We're nothing special. We're just a bunch of really lucky dudes.” (yahoo.com)

Q: Is "luck" something you depend on? How does luck contradict God's will for your life?
