"Things seem to be expected rather than appreciated, and vocabularies tend to be void of a simple thank you."
It's appalling to think about how some teens have become so ungrateful. Things seem to be expected rather than appreciated, and vocabularies tend to be void of a simple thank you. Have you ever wondered where teens have learned this attitude? Unfortunately, they may have seen it lived out through their parents who are their biggest role models. An attitude of gratitude is something teens learn when they see it modeled in their own family. Hope is not lost! Parents can do something now to change this trend. Try showing your teen what the Bible says about being thankful. Then God will be doing the talking, and the conversation will not turn into a "you're always telling me what to do" time. Give your teen less things even if you can afford it. The more "stuff" they obtain without any effort, the less they will appreciate it. Next, give your teen a new perspective. Allow your teen to go on a short-term mission trip. When students see how little others have, they may realize how much God has given them, and their perspective on being thankful may totally change right before your eyes. Lastly, teach your teen that people are drawn to thankful people. It is much easier to be around a person with a grateful attitude than a person who sees the glass as always half empty. An attitude of gratitude is infectious! Set the example in your home as you choose to not only talk about being thankful during the holiday season, but to live it out as well.
What’s new in THE ROCK Student Ministry?

Our model for ministry has been established and is outlined in our student handbook However, we had never formalized a purpose statement. While in Toccoa last August for training, the Student Ministry Team saw the need for a purpose statement. Through prayer, we were lead to a statement that the students are getting excited about and it has been our focus during October’s Reality Check (Wednesday) meetings. All of what we do now points to this purpose statement. It is as follows:

Recognizing that every individual is precious to God and is created for a unique purpose, THE ROCK Student Ministry exists to REACH non-believing students, to CONNECT them with other Christians, to help students GROW in their faith, and to provide opportunities for them to SERVE others, so that their lives will HONOR God.

As always feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
In Christ, Terry

Is your teen aware of all of the great things for which to be thankful? Help them increase their awareness of those blessings with the following questions:

1. What is your favorite Thanksgiving memory?

2. What is the best blessing God has given to you? Why?

3. Have you ever done something where you were not thanked? If so, how did that make you feel?

4. Do you think it is realistic to be thankful in all circumstances? Why or why not?
Pray that:

1. God would give your family an over abundance of gratitude this holiday season.

2. He would make each family member increasingly aware of the blessings He has given.

3. Your family will be thankful in all circumstances no matter what happens to them.

4. A thankful attitude will become a way of life for each member of your family.

Did you know...

* Through modern science, we know that it is physiologically impossible to be fearful and thankful at the same time. (hforhealth.com)

* Be careful this holiday season. The Thanksgiving holiday is typically the most dangerous time to travel. During last year's Thanksgiving period, 560 people were killed in traffic accidents. (cnn.com)

* In preparation for the holidays, there has been an estimated 256 million turkeys raised in the United States in 2005 so far. (communitydispatch.com)

* A typical American consumes 13.7 pounds of turkey in a given year, and, if tradition is true, a hearty helping of it is devoured at Thanksgiving time. (communitydispatch.com)

From a young age, Sarah Groves was writing lyrics and music. She graduated from Evangelical College in 1994 and began teaching high school English and History. She started singing her songs on the side. In 1998, her manager/husband self produced "Past the Wishing." The album gained popularity, "becoming one of the standout independent recordings of that year." Sarah's rich acoustic folk/pop feel mixes well with her "poignantly honest" lyrics. Her desire for her music is to "challenge people to take that next step (with God)." (lyrics.crossmap.com)

Background:
Kelly Clarkson went from anonymous to a nationally known singer after winning the first American Idol. Her vocal talents were discovered when she was in seventh grade as the choir teacher heard her singing and encouraged her to join the choir. After unsuccessfully attempting to "make her name" in Hollywood, she returned to her home town of Burleson, TX. She worked at a local movie theater and was a cocktail waitress until auditioning for American Idol. Her "mature voice, down to earth charm and sense of humor" helped her win the show as well as the $1 million recording contract with RCA. Her most recent awards include Best Female Video and the Best Pop Video awards at the 2005 MTV Music Video Awards. (sonicnet.com)

What parents should know:
Kelly's music deals mostly with relationships, breakups, and love. Though her dress has become more provocative, her lyrics have remained free from foul language and drug/alcohol references.

Parent/Teen Q&A:
"I sang ‘Amazing Grace’ at church one Sunday, and an elderly man told me, ‘God has chosen you and given you the talent, and you’re going to go far with this.' That’s gotten me through the hard times—remembering that it is God’s intent and plan for me to sing." (insidecx.com) Q: Do you think God has a plan for Christians to use their talents in the "world"? Why or why not?

FALL BREAK FELLOWSHIP

On the evening of Sunday, October 9th, 49 youth got together and had a fun-filled time of recreation and socialization. The night began with volleyball and paintball in two separate areas with pizza soon to follow. Dinner was then wrapped up with an application of biblical principles and the gospel message was presented. Then the students went back outdoors for extreme volleyball, a bonfire with marshmallows and s’mores, and the movie, “The Climb”, was shown on the side of the trailer! The night was filled with laughter, friendship, a little friendly competition, and food. What more could a teen ask for?!
