"Be aware that teens are also asking many
questions about the end times and parents may feel like
there are no answers to give." |
|
Is
the end of the world near? What do all these natural
catastrophes mean? It seems like everyone is asking such
questions these days, especially after our country has
experienced the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Here
are just some of the questions teens may be tossing
around in their minds, followed by ways you as parents
can tackle this sensitive subject.
1. "When
will the end of the world come?" Obviously, no one
knows this answer except God (Matthew 24:36). We can
rest in the fact that though many false prophets will be
out there, according to Scripture, we will all know when
Jesus himself returns. (Matthew 24:26-27) 2. "I'm
not ready for Jesus to come yet! I haven't gone to
college, or gotten married or had kids! Why would God
take these experiences away from me?" Many of us
identify with this question. While our minds cannot
grasp heaven, reassure your teens that heaven is going
to be so much greater and more wonderful than anything
here on earth. (Revelation 7:16, 21:4) 3. "Was
Hurricane Katrina another sign that Jesus is coming
soon?" While natural disasters are said in Scripture
to be a sign of the Second Coming (Luke 21:25), natural
disasters have been around for centuries and will
continue to occur. Talk to your teen about how God shows
His massive power through storms and how God shows His
massive love through His people.
During such
uncertain and unexplainable times, do not be afraid to
let your teen know that you don't know all the answers,
but that God is in control. And as always, remember to
keep listening to them just as God does to us!

Teens were asked their opinion regarding the
end times. Here are their responses.
Do you think that the end of the world, as
predicted in the Book of Revelation, will happen in your
lifetime?
29.5 % - Yes. 30% - No. 18.9%
- Not sure. 21.6% - Don't think the Bible predicts
it. (time.com)
Does God have a role in natural disasters like
hurricanes?
6% - Yes, God is punishing
us. 12% - Yes, God is testing us. 29% - Yes,
disasters are sent by God, but we don't know what the
purpose is. 46% - Although I believe in God, the
supernatural has nothing to do with any specific natural
disaster. 7% - God doesn't exist, and disasters like
this are just forces of nature. (beliefnet.com)
